A great successor to 'The Celtic Dagger'. A tale of suspense, family intrigue, and mysteries going back to the Vietnam conflict. DCI FitzHugh is loosing sleep solving this complicated homicide, placating his superior officer Superintendent Greig but obviously enjoying the challenge. I found this book compelling reading until the end was reached. I purchased this book from Amazon (Also available from Smashreads).

5.0 out of 5 stars A Supurb Murder Mystery!, September 5, 2011

This second of a mystery series is a spell binding tale of intrigue, family secrets hidden for decades, blackmail, sibling dysfunction, and a list of compelling characters twisted around the murder of an insufferable man even his wife despised. As the story unwinds the hidden family truths with gripping and expressive descriptions, it becomes apparent a gold locket encrusted with emeralds and diamonds holds a mystery, unknown because the key to it is missing. Murder At The Rocks is a wonderful way to escape reality for a weekend of trying to outguess Detective Inspector Fitzjohn and his assistant as they pursue the in depth police investigation set in Sydney Australia

The protagonist, Detective Chief Inspector Fitzjohn, is given a murder case that comes with a fairly lengthy list of suspects. As if solving a high profile murder wasn't enough, Fitzjohn's life is complicated by his widowerhood, the fact that his immediate boss doesn't like him, and a well-meaning but overbearing sister who's determined to help him get his life back on track. I couldn't help but like the guy. Overall, I really enjoyed this book and am looking forward to reading more from Jill Paterson.

I received this book for free in the Goodreads giveaway because I requested it and was so lucky to win. I adored this book. This was very well written though unfortunately the copy I received does not seem to have been edited by an experienced professional book editor because there were misspellings, mistakes in word use (bazaar for bizarre, etc), punctuation problems, and excessive use of "glared" and "glowered" in every single chapter but this was not enough to spoil the enjoyment of this wonderful story. The characters were interesting and there were so many twists and turns, I suspected pretty much everyone at some point. I liked many of the characters and all of them were well-constructed and not cookie-cutter types.

The story is set in Australia which was exciting for me. There were several side stories which all relate to the main story and this book kept me awake late turning the pages. I highly recommend this to anyone who loves a good mystery. I hope this author will write many more!

Murder At The Rocks: A Fitzjohn Mystery  8 November 2011

My first book review for “Blog Tour de Troops” is Murder at the Rocks by Jill Paterson. In contrast to what you might read in the title, the Rocks do not refer to the beach. They refer to a mansion but to me the Rocks refer to the main characters. How far will a parent go to protect their child? What sacrifices is one person willing to make to ensure someone else’s happiness even if that means forsaking their own?
Murder at the Rocks starts with the introduction of Laurence and Julia Harford, their entire relationship and marriage explained in one smashing scene. Then, we meet Nicholas Harford. Nick is the only child of Laurence’s brother, Edward Harford. And so the book begins …
Despite a good education, good looks, and girlfriends, Nick’s life is troubled. He lost his mother at an early age and he is estranged from his father Edward who passes away before the two can make amends. Due to the fact that Laurence and Edward did not see eye to eye (to put it mildly), Nick has not been in touch with anyone in the family for years. So when he returns to his hometown, he finds himself an orphan, faced with his father’s last notes to him, and of course, his father’s last will and testament. The rest you will have to read on your own.
Murder at the Rocks is very well written. The book is fast paced and will keep you guessing until the end. It features Detective Chief Inspector Fitzjohn and his team. His character is one you will like instantly. An old-fashion cop who believes in integrity and going by the book. Dilligently, the team works together to find out what happened to the victim.
This book is written in the style that I like. We know that someone was murdered but, instead of showering the reader with a lot of gory details Paterson only tells you exactly what you need to know to solve the crime. The violence in the book is implied and to me that makes Paterson the better author. Let me know what you think about this writing style. Comment below this post, then visit the author’s blog during Veteran’s Weekend (Nov 11-14). Mention your comment on DCC and the author will send you a free eBook.
Murder at the Rocks is the second book in the Fitzjohn Mystery Series. The first one was the Celtic Dagger. I hope that one will also become available as an eBook.

Lets see we have blackmail, family secrets, dysfunctional family and to top it off a murder. The family secrets start to come out as you go along and the locket is known, but there is no key. Fitzjohn does not get along with his superior and skates by. Between the twists, taking care of flowers, and solving a murder I suspected almost everyone a long the way at certain points. This book is a must read as you will not want to put it down.

I received a free download of "Murder At The Rocks" by Jill Paterson, through a smashwords coupon.I really enjoyed reading this book.I am an avid reader who enjoys reading mystery suspense thrillers. This book definately fits in this category.Detective Chief Inspector Fitzjohn has to solve the mystery of who murdered Laurence Harford. Harford was such a jerk, the question was really who wouldn't want to kill him? He had been cheating on his wife for years , he bullied his late brother Edward so much the man had a heart attack. he is trying to challenge Edward's will to rob Ed's son Dr. Nick Harford of the 51% share of stock in the jewelry/diamond company's stock left to him, he was having an affair with another man's wife, and so on. There is also the matter of him firing the wife-abusing shop manager and a mysterious man limping in the shadows who seems to put fear into Laurence.

More bodies show up along with more suspects and poor Fitzjohn has to battle to solve the crime while dealing with a meddling sister who comes to town fussing because he is alone after his wife died, a boss Grieg who does not like him, and multiple mysteries all relating to the one at hand. This book is one that will keep you up all night turning the pages and unable to find a good point to stop for the night.

If you enjoy reading a good mystery, this is the book for you.
