Book Review - Fifty-One

This is the first time I have read a science fiction novel and I must say, I have thoroughly enjoyed “Fifty-One” by Chris Barnham, a science fiction and fantasy writer.

The story opens in the futuristic world of London in 2040 before the reader is whisked back in time to the 1940s during the blitz. With a driving force of mystery and romance it is difficult to put this book down as you follow Jake, Lew, Hannah and Nancy on their mission into the past. What they find there and the significance it has for the world of the future propels them to make choices that will have lasting effects on life as they have known it.

It is a fascinating tale full of questions to be answered that will keep you on the edge of your seat. If you enjoy romance, mystery, the turmoil of London during the blitz, along with a smattering of time travel, I’m sure you’ll find Fifty-One a great read.

The Alice Network - Book Review

The Alice Network
by Kate Quinn

Kate Quinn is the author of historical fiction the majority of her work set in Roman times. The Alice Network, however, moves effortlessly between 1915 and 1947.

The main characters, Eve Gardiner, Charlotte (Charlie) St Clair and Finn Kilgore are unlikely travelling companions, each dealing with their own torments. The reader joins them on their journey and experiences into a gripping read.

A work of fiction based on real people and events it focuses on the interaction of the main characters who are thrown together in two aspects. Their search for a woman and a child, missing since 1944, and the network of women in intelligence work during WWI and WWII. These events are skilfulling woven together and come to a dramatic conclusion the result of which is a compelling story.

If you’re looking for a book you can’t put down ”The Alice Network” will not disappoint.
Hats off to Kate Quinn. Highly recommended!
