In Australia November 11 is also known as Poppy Day. The red remembrance poppy has become a familiar emblem of Remembrance Day because they bloomed across some of the worst battlefields of Flanders in World War I.

ReplyDeleteThe word "gory" always makes me run away from a mystery. Thank goodness gore is only implied in "Murder on the Rocks." I also like old fashioned cops and detectives. I would like to read this one. I'm sure the troops will enjoy it. Enjoyed your review.

Thank you so much for being a part of this great event. I'm so glad we can help our soldiers in such a tangible way. Too often it's easy to forget the sacrifices they make.
ReplyDeleteMy son-in-law has been serving in Iraq and will be coming home in time for Christmas. It has been extremely hard on my daughter and even though things are relatively peaceful in Iraq at the moment we still worry about his well-being. Thank you for doing something to make the down time pass a little bit easier for the soldiers serving our country.

As a wife to a currently serving soldier in Afghanistan, I can tell you first hand that receiving books is very important to the soldiers. Sometimes it is the only way they have to keep their mind on home.

The information about how Australia commemorates the vets and those who fallen is really interesting. The poppies are a really bright shock of flowers, so its kind of jarring to think of them in some of the better known battlefields.

The Australian traditions sound much like the British ones (perhaps unsurprisingly), we remember with poppies and silence.

Its great to read a post from someone that lives elsewhere in the world and is just as passionate as the Americans! Although I'm British, I live in Portugal, where we see very little about Remembrance Day, other than on satellite TV. I watched a special broadcast last night about it and I was incredibly touched. It was very moving. Thank you for being such a great support!
